Bacon - Avocado Committee


Characteristics:

It is an avocado with good quality green skin, medium size, available between the end of autumn (May) and the end of July.

Description:
Oval in form, with medium to large stone, easy to peel, gentle flavor.

Size:
Medium. Range between 6 – 12 oz.

Appearance:
Soft, thin green skin. Greenish yellow pulp.

Characteristics when ripe:
The skin remains green, but darkens slightly; sensitive to pressure.

Handling:
It handles well on board ships
Times of the year: in Chile it should be consumed between the end of May and the end of July.
Fuerte (Strong) – Avocado Committee



Fuerte (Strong) – Avocado Committee
Characteristics:
Good quality avocado with soft skin.

Description:
Medium size stone. Easily peeled. Good flavor.

Size:
Medium to large. Between 5-15 oz.

Appearance:
Thin green skin, with soft surface. The pulp is creamy and pale green.

Characteristics when ripe:
Skin remains green.

Handling:
It handles well in warehouses and on ships. Responds to treatment with ethylene.
Times of the year: From beginning of August to the end of October.
 

Gwen - Avocado Committee



Characteristics:
Is similar in appearance, flavor and texture to the Hass avocado, however it is a bit larger.

Description:
A round, oval fruit. The seed is small to medium. It is easily peeled and has good flavor.

Size:
Medium to large fruit. From 6 - 15 oz.

Appearance:
Thin green grainy but flexible skin. Pulp is green and creamy.

Characteristics when ripe:
Excellent in storage, well preserved on board ships. Responds to preconditions of ethylene.

Handling:
Holds up well in warehouses and ships. Responds to treatment with ethylene.

Seasons of the year:
From September to December.


Hass - Avocado Committee



Characteristics:
Recognized by its skin which varies from green to blackish purple as it ripens.

Description:
Oval in form. Stone from small to medium. Easily peeled. Good flavor.

Size:
Large range. Average medium to large 5 – 23 oz.
Appearance: Grainy and thin, but flexible skin. Pulp is pale green with creamy texture.

Ripening characteristics:

The skin darkens; sensitive to pressure when ripe.

Handling:
Excellent warehouse life. Outstanding storage on board ships. Excellent response to treatment with ethylene.

Seasons of the year:
It is the only avocado that produces all year. In Chile available between September and March.


Pinkerton - Avocado Committee

Characteristics:  
Small stone. Available in various sizes at the beginning of the season.

Description:
Long oval shape. Small seed. Excellent characteristics for peeling. Very good flavor.

Size:
Large. Ranges from 8-18 oz.

Appearance:
Skin slightly thick. Pulp creamy, pale green color.

Ripening characteristics:

The green color of the skin darkens as it ripens. Sensitive to pressure when ripe.

Handling:
Does well both in warehouses and on ships.
Times of the year: Available from winter to spring.

Reed - Avocado Committee


Characteristics:
Long, round fruit available in summer months.

Description:

Round form. Seed medium sized. Easily peeled. Good flavor.

Size:
Medium to large. Ranges from 8 – 18 oz.

Appearance:
Thick green skin with minimal graininess. Pulp is “buttery”.

Ripening characteristics:
Skin remains green. Sensitive to pressure.

Handling:
Stores well both in warehouses and on ships. Responds to treatment with ethylene.

Seasons of the year:
From summer to the beginning of autumn.


Zutano - Avocado Committee


Characteristics:
Easily recognized by its brilliant appearance.

Description:
Pear-shaped. Soft flavor

Size:
Medium to large. Ranges between 6-14 oz.

Appearance:
Thin, yellowish green brilliant skin. Pulp is pale green with soft texture.

Ripening features:
Maintains its color on ripening. Sensitive to pressure.

Handling:
Moderate life in warehouse. Stores well on ships. Only responds to treatment with ethylene at beginning of the season.

Seasons of the year:
From autumn to beginning of winter.


Ester - Avocado Committee

 


Description: Round. Large, good flavor

Size: Large

Appearance: Green grainy skin (between Strong [Fuerte] and Hass).

Seasons of the year: From April to June.


Mexicola - Avocado Committee

 

Characteristics: Name varies according to locality. Pulp is stringy.

Description: Oval fruit with white lenticels. Color dark purple. Seed very large.




Negra la Cruz - Avocado Committee

 

Description:
Smooth black skin. Long, pointed form. Good flavor

Seasons of the year:
Between July and September.
